How to Change Your Xbox Gamertag

1. Sign in to Xbox with the Microsoft account attached to the intended profile. Choose Play, open your gamerpic menu, and select View full profile.

2. Use the edit icon beside your gamertag. Xbox also documents Settings > Account > Change gamertag as an entry point. Type a candidate or use Randomize for an Xbox suggestion.

3. Inspect the next screen's name preview and any charge. Finish with Change gamertag only when both are acceptable. Stop before confirmation if you are still comparing names.

Open the guide with the Xbox button. Under Profile & system, select the correct profile, then My profile > Customize profile. Select the current gamertag to enter a replacement.

Use Check availability, review how the name will appear, and confirm with Change gamertag. If several profiles are signed in, double-check the gamerpic first.

The first-change allowance applies whether your original name was assigned automatically or chosen by you. Later changes have a fee. Use the amount displayed for your account; there is no single worldwide price to quote.

General Xbox help lists up to 12 characters for Xbox One, Series X|S, and Windows. A June 24, 2026 Insider announcement separately previews up to 15 for unique, available Latin-character names, starting with Alpha Skip-Ahead. That announcement does not establish availability for every account. Follow your actual change screen.

Read the message rather than assuming another player owns the exact name. Xbox says unavailable can also mean inappropriate or unusable at that time. Try another word structure and review any suffix offered.

Xbox updates friends lists automatically after a change. Tell regular teammates if they know the old name, and update separate Discord, clan, or streaming profiles yourself.
